What to expect at your first pointe shoe fitting
Your safety is our professional fitters top priority, a bespoke pointe shoe fitting is an important, non-negotiable step in every dancer’s training.
Pointe shoes are as individually unique as your feet and the fitting process should not be rushed.
There are many other elements to observe when having your first pointe shoe fitted. We stock a range of brands, sizes, and strengths – the same size and style will feel differently from one dancer to the next.
Once your dance teacher has assessed you to begin your journey en pointe, it’s time to book your pointe shoe fitting — here’s what to expect at your first pointe shoe fitting.
How do ballet pointe shoes fit?
Ballet pointe shoes should be comfortably-snug they need to be fitted to the feet, with little movement inside the shoe.
However, you should be able to wriggle your toes inside the shoe!
What to wear to a pointe shoe fitting
Please wear comfortable clothes, convertible tights or ballet socks.
Your toe nails need to be trimmed and your fitter will need to see your bare feet.
Throughout your session you’ll be asked to perform ballet movements so your fitter can assess how you move in your pointe shoes.
The pointe shoe fitting process
Once you’ve arrived for your first pointe shoe fitting and established exactly what you’re looking for, an expert fitter will evaluate your feet.
They will observe the shape, and you’ll be ask you to work through the arch, stretching through tendu or rise to relevé from a parallel position.
Completing the fit
The fitter can only go on what they see and is unable to know exactly how it feels on your foot, its important to speak up when a style is causing discomfort to aid the fitter in finding which style is right for you.
To complete the fit, the fitter wil talk you through the variety of accessories, toe padding available, how to sew ribbons to customise your individual fit.
How long does a pointe shoe fitting take?
A pointe shoe fitting can vary in time and should never be rushed. The more information you give the fitter, the more effective the fitting will be.
If you have danced on pointe before please bring your old shoes and padding with you, as this will provide helpful information for the fitter to gauge how you work in your pointe shoes and how your needs have changed from your previous pair of shoes.
Your feet are ever-changing, the amount of pointe work you do in class will change and therefore your pointe shoe needs will develop too!
